São Pedro da Aldeia
Colonization of the lands that currently make up the city of São Pedro da Aldeia
(Saint Peter of the Village) leads back to the beginning of the 17th century.
It was on 1617, in the territory of the current city of Rio de Janeiro, with the
beginning of the construction for the chapel dedicated to Saint Peter that the
Aldeia de São Pedro (Village of Saint Peter) was founded, being the first mark
of colonization raised in these lands.
It has attractions of historical and cultural value, such as the Casa da Flor
(House of the Flower).
Considered to be a masterpiece of spontaneous architecture, it was built by
Gabriel Joaquim dos Santos (1892 - 1985), a poor man who worked at the salt
marshes in the region. Gabriel used materials he gathered from everywhere he
went to erect it: ceramic pieces, dishware, tiles, and a whole series of objects
deemed useless to many.
The only navy air base of the Brazilian Navy, established in 1966, is located in the city. Some beaches, such as Linda (Beautiful) and Ponta da Areia (Sand
End), both sought by sailors, also stand out.
