Niterói

Situated on the other side of Baía de Guanabara, facing Rio de Janeiro, it is a charming city that awaits your visit with lush nature, innumerous leisure options, an incredible complex history and stunning works of architecture.

To arrive you can either cross the Rio-Niterói bridge, which is 13 km long, or cross the Baía de Guanabara. Start your visit with the Caminho Niemeyer (Niemeyer Trail), an architectural complex that when finished will have 11 buildings by the famous architect. The Museu de Arte Contemporânea (MAC – Museum of Contemporary Art), the Teatro Popular de Niterói (Popular Theater of Niterói), Praça JK (Juscelino Kubitschek Square), the Terminal de Barcas Charitas (Charitas Ferry Terminal) and the Memorial Roberto Silveira (Roberto Silveira Memorial) are already operating.

After the circuit, make a visit to the city’s beaches. Those on Baía de Guanabara – Icaraí, Boa Viagem, Jurujuba, Adão e Eva (Adam and Eve), São Francisco (Saint Francis) and Charitas – are great for playing sports and walking. Those around the Região Oceânica (Ocean Region) - Itacoatiara, Camboinhas, Piratininga, Itaipu, among others – delight with their clear waters, dense vegetation, good waves, in addition to bars and restaurants. For the ecotourism adept, it is worth visiting the Parque Estadual da Serra da Tiririca (Serra da Tiririca State Park), a region with 2,400 hectares of green area. There are three trails available for the visitor: Costão de Itacoatiara (Big Coast of Itacoatiara), which has a 180º view of the sea; Enseada do Bananal (Bananal Cove), whose trail and climb leads to a 412m high peak and Pedra do Elefante (Elephant’s Stone), surrounded by a beautiful cove and vegetation from the Atlantic Forest.

The city’s forts, the largest complex of its kind in the country, deserve a separate itinerary. Start with Gragoatá, with an ample view of the bay and continue on to the forts of Imbuí and Barão do Rio Branco (Baron of Rio Branco), on Praia de Fora (Fora Beach). Then go to the forts of Pico (Peak) or São Luís (Saint Louis), situated at 230 m high, and finish at the Fortaleza de Santa Cruz da Barra (Santa Cruz da Barra Fort), with imposing architecture). Niterói is a charming city and full of options. Discover Niterói and come back soon!
